Washington (TFT) – Gina Haspel’s nomination to lead the CIA is becoming increasingly likely with another Democrat Senator announcing his support.
Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly announced on May 12 he would be supporting Gina Haspel’s nomination to become the next Director. Senator Donnelly now stands alongside West Virginia Senator, Joe Manchin, in backing Haspel.
“Importantly, Ms. Haspel expressed to me her commitment to be responsive to congressional oversight and to provide her unvarnished assessment – both to members of Congress and the president. For those reasons, and after careful consideration, I will support Ms. Haspel’s nomination to lead the agency to which she has dedicated her career.”
While two Democrat votes will help Haspel move closer to confirmation, she is facing pushback from Senators on the right side of the aisle. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) announced he will not be supporting Haspel’s nomination, while Republican Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) seems poised to oppose her. On May 14, Senator Paul tweeted out a Politico article that questioned Hapsel’s past in regards to torture.
If confirmed, Gina Haspel will be the first female director of the CIA. Haspel is a decorated career officer, having served seven tours in various positions during her thirty year career at the agency. The Senate Intelligence Committee will vote Wednesday, May 16 on her nomination.
